A lead magnet is a helpful marketing tool for almost any business. It is a great offer to help you build your email list and build leads for your business. What makes an effective or good lead magnet?

Honestly, it’s the answer you often get - a good lead magnet is something people find valuable enough to sign up and exchange their email in order to get.

What Is A Good Lead magnet?

A better answer is a good lead magnet will provide information to your prospect or customer that will help them transition to the next stage… of something. It is a document or piece of content they can use in their business or life to bring benefit to their journey.

You want your lead magnet to be free and easy to deliver to your target market. It shouldn’t be huge and overwhelming either.

I offer my target market - agencies and businesses that want to create copy or content for their business - a way to reuse this content. It’s an outline of options they can apply to the written content or copy I have made for them.

It’s about taking my market on a journey to the next step. It might be about saving time for them. They have a lot of content to create - how can I make it easier for them? They also have a lot of content, what could they do with it other than the one original thing we created?

Most every business could benefit from having a lead magnet. We recently talked about your business funnel and how you probably have a funnel even if you don’t know it. If you have sold your work you have a funnel. Even if it’s crude. (You can refine the funnel and expand on the funnel as you build your business with a lead magnet and landing capture page.)

A lead magnet can be a very vital part of your sales funnel. It can be a key player in moving your target market through the sales process.

You can offer lead magnets during different stages of your prospect’s sales or “thinking about it” journey to encourage them to move forward with their decision.

What Is A Lead Magnet In Marketing?

If you have a prospect that is interested in your message or what you have to say about your product or service but isn’t ready to sign up for whatever reason, a good lead agent could address that objection right upfront. It could be a webinar talking about how hiring you would benefit them and make their life better and here are some tips to get you started before you hire anyone.

It’s important to be creative when working with your lead magnet. It’s intended to give value to your prospect so they can be better without hiring you or even speaking with you yet.

Maybe people will take this lead magnet and nothing will come of it.

So that’s huge! This stuff works. 

Even if you have to make a lead magnet and revise it over time to find what works for your business, It’s a great option to try if you haven’t already. If it’s not working, it’s good to try something different. Maybe you haven’t been getting the word out and sharing the fact that you have this helpful lead magnet often enough?

How To Create A Good Lead Magnet

If you want to make a lead magnet that people actually want and will sign up for review this list to create a good lead magnet.

  1. What are your prospect’s pain points? What do they struggle with that you can help them fix?
  2. Make the process a small win. Something they can do or implement that won’t take a year to apply.
  3. Focus in tightly on what needs to be done for your target market. Don’t make the solution too broad. Something pretty specific. Can you think of something specific for this group only?
  4. Bite-sized. A few pages of a pdf or a slightly longer ebook. A 20 min webinar? Nothing too overwhelming.
  5. The information should be a process that ties into your service. You’ll notice mine is on an expansion of my product and service. What should we do with what I am giving you that’s beyond the thing we made it for in the first place?

If you are a tax attorney or swim instructor, how can you give your audience a bit of info to take them to the next level? Maybe a webinar on how to easily organize your receipts for tax season? Or a simple way to fix 5 different swim stroke errors and get swimming quickly?

Quick and simple and things they can apply to get quick results and make their life or the project they are working on better.

What can you come up with for your business to help bring in more leads?

Write down some ideas, put a couple together and try them out. Ask around if it’s something people find helpful.

I knew I had a great lead magnet when people were excited to download it and they even started to share it around! Fantastic. And, I have made and tried many lead magnets before this one.
