Spending money in your business can be a personal decision. What to spend it on is also a strategic one. How much should be delegated for what can be a crapshoot. It can be confusing and difficult to decipher what to spend your business money on.
Marketing is one of the areas you might be wondering about. “How the heck do I know how much to spend in this area?”
And, “I didn’t even know there was any thought on the subject of marketing budgets!”
So, we are going to talk about it today. Because yes, putting a budget to the specific areas of your business can help delineate your cash flow and decipher the best places to direct your funds towards.
What am I saying?
Decide how much is appropriate to spend on your business marketing. Decide how you’re going to decide how much you should spend on your marketing. LOL!
First, if you don’t know how to pronounce Voiyoo or what the heck a Voiyoo is - check out my article about it. It’s not easy to pick a business name anymore and I had to be creative!
Just pay attention to the ads on TV and the stuff they are coming up with now. The Zebra? For car insurance? The next business looking for a name will need to add an adjective to that. Polka Dot Zebra? Green Zebra? Have you noticed this, too?
But, I like the name I chose and it has a nice back story. Let me know what you think.
Who The Heck Is Jennifer Ressmann with Voiyoo Business Writing Anyway?
Do you even know who I am? My name is Jennifer Ressmann and I am a Floridian and a Coloradan. One of my favorite parts of my life is that I get to go back and forth to 2 of my favorite states in the US throughout the year. They are both just gorgeous parts of the country and I really encourage you to visit them both... as often as you can!
I love popcorn, watermelon and all fruit. I love hiking, boating and spending time with my husband and the Murph, our happy, smart, friendly border collie. I hate the cold. I love love hot weather.
When it comes to work, I love to work with people that understand how important blogging and content can be for their business.

Sometimes, ya gotta be bold. Ya gotta make a change in your business because the way it’s going isn’t really working. You might have had a business for a while and need to change what your business does for a number of reasons.
1. It’s not selling enough
2. It’s complicated and difficult to manage
3. It’s awful, stressful, and down-right crummy.
There are many reasons you might want to change up what your business does. And, honestly, if you are feeling bad...stop. If it’s not working, just change it. Life is too short to hang on to something that’s not working.
And, life is too short to carry any guilt around about your business change with you. Making any sort of big change is going to be hard enough. So let it go! And make the change you need.
CAN I CHANGE WHAT MY BUSINESS DOES?
You know, things don’t always work out, but staying with the old way will just hold you back.
If you decide to change it up that’s a good thing. You are noticing you need to do things in a new way.
For me I am being bold by adjusting my business structure and what I offer.
Building a brand for your business can mean so many things. One thing for sure, being consistent with your brand across your platforms and with your message is a good way to develop it. When you build a business you want to stand out and be recognizable. When someone sees something great that you are attached to like a website or an article, you want them to quickly comprehend that it’s from you. You want them to quickly relate your branding with that content.
Another way of putting it is everything looks the same across the board when you are online or off. Your logo is consistently the same, you are always represented by the same select grouping of colors and type styles. The shapes you choose for any graphics or designs should also tie into your branding look. When you pop up online your brand should be consistent and cohesive across the board.
BRANDING AS YOUR MESSAGE
Other areas where branding can come into play for your business is with your mission and your message to your community. Are you the discount painting service in your location? If you have chosen to make this the message for your brand then you need to talk about this as a benefit to using your group. If this is something you want to be known for then you need to communicate this with the public. Incorporating it into your marketing and tag lines is a great place to start.
You are finally taking the time to start your business blog! That’s awesome! I know you have a lot on your plate, but these blog things can be super helpful. Let’s talk about that first! Why should I be blogging for your business anyway?! How is this important?
WHY BLOG FOR BUSINESS
Everyone is talking about it and you know you need to get on it. But why is it important anyway...blogging?
It helps to first figure out what purpose you want your blog to have. What is the point of writing all of this content, right? My suggestion is to think about what your clientele is looking for when they go online for answers to their questions about your type of business. What is it your customers want and how can you fulfill that need?
1. Client Questions. Help your specific clientele with the valuable answers, tips, and info they are looking for in your area. Answer the questions they have with answers in your blog content.
2. Expert In Your Field. When you blog for your business you show the expertise that you hold. You show your professionalism and abilities to the world, to your community, to your prospective clientele.
3. You Educate! This is a great reason to blog. People are always wondering how something works in your industry and this is the perfect platform to share it.
4. Content to Market. Marketing requires a lot of content creation and sharing. When you have a blog you have the perfect content to share that will route traffic to your website.
5. Search Engine Response. When you blog on your website consistently you not only tell your clientele that you’re serious and professional, you are telling the search engines the same thing. They like that and will show that info in a search request when people come looking for your type of business more often than when someone doesn’t blog.

I am talking with you today during the pandemic of 2020. And, you might be wondering what you should be doing for your business during this crummy time. Yes, it’s a downturn in the economy. And, yes, it’s different from other economic issues we have gone through in our lifetime. But, business is still going on. And, you can research it, but businesses that make it out of downturns and do well are often the businesses that continue to keep marketing.
You might be thinking, really? “Should I be marketing at all?” For one reason or another, you might be asking yourself if it’s worth your time or money, if it’s appropriate when others are hurting to spend you energy talking about your business or even celebrating what you have to offer to others.
But, I’m here to tell you now is the perfect time to be marketing your business. Like I pointed out earlier. The businesses that made it out better than others were the ones that continued to market right through the rough patches. Right through the hard times. Right through the rocky periods.
How does the song go? “If you’re going through hell, keep on going, don’t slow down, if you’re scared don’t show it, you might get out before the devil even knows you’re there!” That’s just fantastic isn’t it! Who would have thought Rodney Atkins was talking about the business world?!
Now. There. You see marketing is still important to your business even during the crap times. So, on that note, where should you focus your business efforts. You have a lot of options.
Like direct marketing like fliers and postcards, social media marketing, video marketing, email marketing or my favorite…. blogging. And, you can certainly aim for some of them. But, blogging is your primary key foundation to all your marketing. It’s one of the big reasons I like it and why I always encourage all businesses to start here.
So now you’re asking yourself, what’s the big deal about blogging. Isn’t that already old school marketing stuff? Pthhhh…. Just because it’s been around a long time doesn’t mean it’s dead. It’s still around because it’s tried and true and proved to be valuable to marketing and educating your customers.
One of the big reasons it can be tough to stay on a blogging and content creation schedule is the giant mess you have on your computer. You have started blog articles, left them unfinished, moved to the next article and then left and moved on to yet another project.
When you’ve had time to come back to your blog article writing, you spend 20 minutes just trying to find the document you were working on or wondering what you were in the middle of and trying to pick itup where you left off.
